G-Shock makes a splash with new Royal Navy x Frogman special-edition dive watch

Casio’s third partnership with the U.K.’s Ministry of Defence is here, and it’s called the Royal Navy x G-Shock Frogman. Based on the latest G-Shock Frogman watch released last year, it comes in a unique color scheme inspired by the HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier — the largest in the Royal Navy’s fleet.

It looks superb, with the case and strap in contrasting gray colors to match the ship’s hull, augmented by a red second hand, complication markers, and a mode pointer. The face is in a navy blue, and the hands are white to complete the red, white, and blue color scheme. The bezel, crown, clasp, keeper, and case back are in black. The Royal Navy’s emblem has been added to the keeper, while G-Shock collectors will love the iconic “frog” motif, now with a Royal Navy anchor, on the case back.

The Royal Navy x G-Shock Frogman’s technical specifications are identical to the standard version, which means it has Bluetooth to connect to your phone, so you can set the world time, alarms, and also add dive data from your trips in an app. The Frogman is a true dive watch, with 200 meters of water resistance and ISO certification, meaning it’s far from a showpiece and is ready for use by pro divers.

All the usual G-Shock protection is there, including carbon-fiber monocoque construction, vibration, shock, and magnetic resistance, plus sapphire crystal over the dial for scratch protection. Other features include a tide mode, Multiband 6 automatic time adjustment, and solar power so it never needs charging. We took a close look at the new Frogman — G-Shock’s first with an analogue dial — when it was released.

The GWF-A1000RN-8AER Royal Navy x G-Shock Frogman (to give it its typically lengthy full G-shock name) was released on April 7 in the U.K. for 799 British pounds (around $1,115 U.S.), which is 100 pounds more than the standard version. It will be available in the U.S. at the end of April for $1,000, through G-Shock’s online store, and its Soho store in New York. A normal G-Shock Frogman costs $800 in the U.S.

It’s the third collaboration with the Ministry of Defence for Casio G-Shock, following the British Army’s Mudmaster, and the Royal Airforce’s Gravitymaster. All models provide a Bluetooth connection, and are based on refreshed models with updated designs.

The G-Steel B500 is the most comfortable G-Shock watch I’ve ever worn
Man wearing a Casio G-Shock GST-B500.

Slim, light, and quite modestly sized for a G-Shock, the new G-Steel GST-B500 watch has a Bluetooth connection, solar charging, and costs less than an Apple Watch Series 7. I’ve been wearing it for about a week and have been pleasantly surprised by just how neatly it fits on my wrist. Forget any preconceptions about G-Shock watches being too big and bulky for normal, everyday use. The new G-Steel is here to change your perception.
Light, slim, and green

There are several versions of the GST-B500, but I’ve been wearing the GST-B500AD-3AER with its lovely green dial. Green is definitely an on-trend color in the watch world at the moment, and it’s fairly subtle here, requiring specific lighting for it to really pop. The G-Steel trademark spinning mode indicator has a metal finish and its glint catches your eye more often than not.

A sequel to G-Shock’s futuristic sci-fi mecha-watch is coming
Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000TVB seen from the front.

One of the highlights of Casio G-Shock’s 2021 release calendar was the superb GMW-B5000TVA, a sci-fi-inspired timepiece based on its popular “square” B5000 model, which would have looked right at home on Ripley's wrist in Aliens. Perhaps unsurprisingly, G-Shock wants to see if it can capture the same degree of attention again, and will release a second version, called the GMW-B5000TVB, this summer.

Gone is the cool black finish from the B5000TVA and in comes a geometric camouflage pattern in a combination of black, brown, and shades of beige. Sharp lines separate the different colors, matching the watch’s squared-off, angular case and bracelet. The first version evoked thoughts of giant fighting robots and the pilots housed within, while this version looks like the watch that would be worn by those on the ground supporting them.

The tech-boosted G-Shock GA-B2100 watch is a great buy
Blue and yellow G-Shock GA-B2100 together.

It can initially be quite hard to grasp why the little Casio G-Shock GA-B2100 is such a brilliant watch. After all, it’s cheap, it’s not a sci-fi-influenced limited edition, and on the technology side, it’s not as comprehensively specced as a fitness-orientated G-Shock, let alone an Apple Watch.

Yet it’s one of my favorite G-Shock watches of recent times, and a great buy. Here’s why.
Why is it popular?
The original G-Shock GA-2100 (note the lack of the B in its name) came out in 2019 and was an instant hit. The $99 price point was just right, the analog/digital look is pure G-Shock, and it was available in various colors so it appealed to the many people who buy G-Shock watches as fashion accessories. The passing (if you squint very hard) resemblance to the Audemars Piguet’s octagonal Royal Oak luxury watch helped build its legend online too.
