Voice actor Troy Baker shares his reactions to HBO’s The Last of Us

Astute viewers of HBO’s The Last of Us episode 8 may have noticed that Troy Baker had a small role this week as James. Baker isn’t quite as well-known in live-action, but he’s a prominent voice-over actor who is one of the rare performers to have played both Batman and the Joker. More importantly to fans of this franchise, Baker was the original voice of Joel in The Last of Us video games. While his role in the show amounted to a guest star appearance, HBO is keeping Baker involved as the host of The Last of Us podcast. He also answered questions about the series in a pair of videos from HBO.

In the first video, Baker briefly touches on his successor, Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel on the series.

“Selfishly, I really wanted to see what it looked like for someone else to play Joel,” said Baker. “This is literally a dream come true. My goal with doing the show was that whoever played Joel would teach me something I didn’t know about the character. Show me something that I missed. That’s what Pedro does. He shows me that Joel is bigger than any one performance.”

Baker was particularly touched by the love story between Bill and Frank, which was depicted in episode 3. That relationship is one of the primary topics in Baker’s second video below.

“My reaction to seeing the story of Bill and Frank in the show resulted in a lot of tears,” noted Baker. “In the show, we got to see what that relationship looked like. Something that I think that Craig and Neil did very, very well was putting on display what a long-term loving relationship looks like literally in the midst of Hell.”

The Last of Us season 1 finale will premiere this Sunday, March 12, on HBO and HBO Max.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Last of Us season 2.

Things are going to get bigger, sadder, and — somehow — even darker in The Last of Us season 2. That won't come as much of a surprise to those who have played 2020's The Last of Us Part II. The infamously divisive game shocked players four years ago with its unexpected twists and relentless violence. Now, based on its recent trailer, it looks like The Last of Us season 2 is going to stick fairly closely to the bleak path laid by its parent game.

The Last of Us season 2 teaser trailer: Joel, Ellie, and a whole lot of clickers
A conflicted Pedro Pascal looks sad in The Last of Us.

Danger is on the horizon for Joel and Ellie in HBO’s official teaser for The Last of Us season 2.
Set to an eerie version of Pearl Jam’s Future Days, the season 2 teaser begins with a conflicted Joel (Pedro Pascal) trying to confess a secret to Catherine O’Hara’s character. This is likely a reference to how Joel killed a surgeon and several Fireflies who attempted to operate on Ellie to develop a cure for the virus. The surgery would have likely killed Ellie, so Joel’s actions saved her life, but delayed a chance at a cure.
Elsewhere, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is adjusting to life in the Jackson community five years after the events of season 1. However, the clickers remain a threat as they mobilize and gain strength in numbers.

Per season 2’s logline, “Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
Besides Pascal and Ramsey, Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria are also returning for season 2.
New additions to the ensemble include Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. O’Hara, who is speaking with Pascal’s Joel in the teaser, will guest star.
