Casio’s newest watch fixes the thing most people don’t like about G-Shocks

Following on from the G-Shock GBD-H2000 hybrid sports smartwatch, Casio has announced the DW-H5600 hybrid, which takes much of what we liked about the H2000 and puts it inside the classic square G-Shock case. This makes it a lot more wearable, as not only is the case slimmer and less wide, but the watch is also a lot lighter at 59 grams.

Like the GBD-H2000, the H5600 uses Polar’s algorithms for its health and fitness tracking features, which now include running, walking, gym workouts, and interval training too. The heart rate sensor on the back of the watch monitors both heart rate and blood oxygen levels, plus it’s suitable for sleep tracking too. This is where the H5600 makes sense, as the H2000 is too bulky to be worn comfortably overnight.

During workout tracking, expect to see data including heart rate, cardio load, stride if you’re running, and speed too. The watch counts your steps daily, logs sleep stages, and includes guided breathing exercises. The H5600 uses Bluetooth to connect to your Android device or iPhone and will display notifications on the small Memory-in-Pixel (MIP) screen. It syncs with the Casio Watches app, where you can easily set the world time and view all the collected data. The watch does not have GPS, so it relies on your phone for location tracking.

The good news is with normal, regular use, the DW-H5600 won’t require recharging. It’s solar-powered, unlike the similar G-Shock GBD-200, and provided it sees a strong light source on a regular basis, you won’t have to worry much at all. If you continuously use the heart rate tracking and the watch doesn’t get enough light, it may need topping up. This is performed using a supplied proprietary charger. All the expected G-Shock toughness is here, with 200 meters of water resistance too.

There are five different versions of the DW-5600, including a special 40th-anniversary version with an interchangeable case and band and a pair with a resin bezel rather than a metal bezel, but not all versions will be sold in all regions. In the U.S. the resin bezel DW-5600 in black and pale blue will cost $299 and be available from May 19. In the U.K. the black and pale blue models cost 269 British pounds (or around $336), and will be joined by a black version with a metal bezel for 315 pounds (or around $395), plus the 40th-anniversary model with the additional case and band for 389 pounds (around $486).

The tech-boosted G-Shock GA-B2100 watch is a great buy
Blue and yellow G-Shock GA-B2100 together.

It can initially be quite hard to grasp why the little Casio G-Shock GA-B2100 is such a brilliant watch. After all, it’s cheap, it’s not a sci-fi-influenced limited edition, and on the technology side, it’s not as comprehensively specced as a fitness-orientated G-Shock, let alone an Apple Watch.

Yet it’s one of my favorite G-Shock watches of recent times, and a great buy. Here’s why.
Why is it popular?
The original G-Shock GA-2100 (note the lack of the B in its name) came out in 2019 and was an instant hit. The $99 price point was just right, the analog/digital look is pure G-Shock, and it was available in various colors so it appealed to the many people who buy G-Shock watches as fashion accessories. The passing (if you squint very hard) resemblance to the Audemars Piguet’s octagonal Royal Oak luxury watch helped build its legend online too.

G-Shock’s red-and-gold MR-G watch makes a strong statement
G-Shock MRG-B2000B on the wrist showing the dial.

Luxury smartwatches aren’t especially common, but if you are a fan of a luxury connected watch, there are more options, especially if you consider Casio’s G-Shock range. The company has released two new entries in its MR-G lineup, the MRG-B5000B and the MRG-B2000B.

Unlike the all-digital B5000, the MRG-B2000B. is an analog watch, but it still has a Bluetooth connection to make setting up and using common features a little easier than just with the buttons. I’ve been wearing the watch with its hand-finished titanium case, and boy, does it make a statement.
Luxury materials, tough features
The MRG-2000B is based on the MTG-B2000. The differences are in the materials used, the module inside the watch, and the way it’s built. G-Shock MR-G watches are built by hand at Casio’s factory in Yamagata, Japan, and assembled by the company’s most qualified engineers. The module used is functionally the same as the MT-G model's, but it's made with gold-plated retainer plates to reduce electrical resistance.

Striking new Burning Red hybrid G-Shock fitness watches will make you stand out
Casio G Shock Burning Red models.

One of our favorite things about Casio’s G-Shock range of watches is the breadth of choice there is when it comes to colors and styles. We reviewed the simple black version of the GBD-200 Bluetooth fitness watch, but if that’s not bright enough for you then take a look at the new Burning Red series, which paints the GDB-200 and GBA-900 hybrid connected watches in a striking red color.
