Ultraloq showcases the first-ever ultra-wideband smart lock at CES 2025

Ultraloq showed off two smart locks at CES 2025 — one of which is the first smart lock to ever offer ultra-wideband (UWB) support. The Ultraloq Bolt Mission UWB + NFC uses UWB technology to unlock automatically as you approach your front door. Similar functionality already exists on other smart locks, but UWB should allow the Ultraloq Bolt Mission to be more accurate than the competition.

The Bolt Mission uses technology similar to digital car keys, and Ultraloq says it can track the keyholder’s phone location with “centimeter-level” accuracy. As your phone gets closer to the front door, the Bolt Mission can be programmed to automatically unlock, giving you a hands-free way to get inside. Better yet, because the smart lock can detect both your distance and direction from the front door, it should prevent you from accidentally unlocking the smart lock while inside your home.

Toss in NFC support for tap-to-unlock functionality, automatic locking, and the use of voice commands via Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings, and it’s clear the Ultraloq Bolt Mission UWB + NFC is a well-rounded gadget. It even supports Matter to better integrate with the rest of your smart home.

You’ll find plenty of security features on the smart lock too, including Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association Level 1 certification for its durability, a weather-resistant IP65 rating, and two-layer 128-bit AES data encryption with AWS integration. In other words, the lock will be hard to bypass both physically and digitally.

The second smart lock at CES 2025 was the Bolt Fingerprint Matter. This is Ultraloq’s first smart lock to support Matter, allowing it to easily sync with the rest of your smart home. It’s not quite as exciting as the other smart lock on display (offering common features like app control and a fingerprint scanner), but it should make a nice addition to homes working with multiple smart home platforms.

Both smart locks are expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2025. The Bolt Fingerprint Matter will cost $199 and the Bolt Mission UWB + NFC will cost $399.

Ecovacs came out swinging at CES 2025, revealing a slew of smart home products running the gamut from robot vacuums and lawnmowers to bizarre window-cleaning robots. The star, however, was the Deebot X8 Pro Omni -- a powerful robot vacuum that makes big changes to its mopping abilities thanks to a new collaboration with Tineco.

Though it didn’t pick up a robotic arm like the Roborock Saros Z70, the Deebot X8 Pro Omni did learn some cool new mopping techniques. There are two big upgrades here, the first being additional pressure while mopping. The X8 Pro Omni can create up to 4,000Pa pressure and spin at up to 200 rpm, which should result in better cleaning than anything else we’ve seen from Ecovacs so far. The other upgrade is a self-washing mop, which continually cleans itself while mopping your floors, ensuring every mess is tackled by a clean mop.

When it comes to smart home technology, smart locks are some of the most convenient gadgets you can buy. They'll automatically unlock your door as you approach, making it a lot easier to get inside when your arms are full of groceries (only one trip, right?). On the other hand, they can sometimes unlock when you don't want them to — like when you're looking out the window beside the door. The Schlage Sense Pro made its debut at CES 2025, and it practically reads your mind.

OK, it can't actually read your mind, but it's a bit mind-blowing what it can do. The Sense Pro reads your approach and responds accordingly. If you walk up to the door with purpose, it will unlock — but a slow saunter won't trigger the lock. It reads your direction, speed, and movement to know whether to activate or not. Of course, it's dependent on you having your mobile device on your person.

Imagine having fresh vegetables and herbs all throughout the year, no matter how cold the weather is. Sounds nice, doesn't it? At CES 2025, a device that looks straight out of the space age makes that a possibility. The PlantaForm Indoor Smart Garden is a fully enclosed system that uses fogponics (rather than aeroponics or hydroponics) to grow plants, and that means it uses a lot less water than traditional gardening methods.

It's both environmentally- and space-friendly. The system solves one of the biggest issues with other smart gardens: the grow lights. While almost every smart garden uses artificial lighting to accelerate growth, the lights need to remain on for anywhere from eight to 16 hours per day. If the garden is in your living room, bedroom, or another space, it becomes uncomfortably bright and sometimes too loud when the water flows — but they can work as an effective wake-up alarm in a pinch. The PlantaForm is enclosed with tinted glass that greatly reduces the brightness and makes it much more compatible with a smaller home.
