Bose soundbars can now send surround sound to your earbuds

Bose has rebranded its midrange Smart Soundbar 600 as simply the “Bose Smart Soundbar.” The size, the sound, and even price ($499) remain the same, but the new model offers an improved AI-powered dialogue mode, plus a wild new option for those who own the company’s Bose Open Ultra Earbuds: surround sound without surround speakers. It’s available starting September 18 from bose.com.

Bose’s AI Dialogue Mode debuted on the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, and its machine learning-based algorithm lets the soundbar automatically adjust tonal balance in real time when it detects speech in an audio stream for clarity. This creates more separation between voices and background sound effects.

But from an innovation point of view, Bose Personal Surround Sound is the most interesting aspect of the new Bose Smart Soundbar. That’s the name Bose has given to the ability to pair a set of Bose Open Ultra Earbuds to the soundbar, which lets the earbuds receive the same left/right surround channels that would otherwise be processed by the bar itself, or sent wirelessly to a set of Bose Surround Speakers.

Because the Open Ultra Earbuds use an open-ear design, the wearer can hear both the soundbar and the earbuds at the same time. Bose Personal Surround Sound will eventually be offered as an update to the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar. Digital Trends asked a Bose spokesperson if the company planned to enable Personal Surround Sound on the existing Smart Soundbar 600. “We’re always looking at ways we can expand product functionality for our existing customers,” we were told via email, but Bose didn’t have any specific info to share regarding the 600.

While it might not make sense to buy the $299 Open Ultra Earbuds just for this purpose, if you already own them — or have been considering them — you may be able to save yourself $100 (the Bose Surround Speakers cost $399).

The rebranding continues Bose’s move away from number-oriented model names. The company has already discontinued its smallest smart soundbar — the Smart Soundbar 300 — and rebranded the Smart Soundbar 900 as the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, leaving just two Wi-Fi connected soundbars in the company’s home theater portfolio. The Bose TV Speaker is the company’s non-Wi-Fi option.

The Bose Smart Soundbar maintains Dolby Atmos compatibility, helped by its built-in up-firing drivers, and it enjoys excellent wireless streaming support thanks to AirPlay 2, Google Cast (formerly Chromecast built-in), Alexa Cast, and Bluetooth. You can use it as an Amazon Alexa smart speaker, and it’s compatible with Google Assistant.

The Cleer Arc 3 might be the most advanced open-ear earbuds so far
Cleer Audio Arc 3.

Cleer Audio appears to have pulled out all the stops for its latest open-ear earbuds, the Cleer Arc 3. In addition to the features that were introduced on the Cleer Arc II Sport, like a charging case with its own battery, antibacterial UV lighting, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound, the Arc 3 add better water protection, voice control, and spatial audio with Dolby-powered head tracking. And the charging case now sports its own color touchscreen. The Cleer Arc 3 are available in black and pink color choices for $220 on amazon.com starting October 24. Cleer says additional colors are coming soon.

Design-wise, the Cleer Arc 3 use the same articulated, spring-loaded earhook as previous generations, and I've found that it offers a comfortable, yet secure fit. Cleer says the earbuds are now rated IPX7, making them effectively waterproof, even if fully submerged in water.

Soundcore’s newest clip-style earbuds focus on comfort
Soundcore C40i open-ear earbuds.

Soundcore has introduced its next clip-style open-ear wireless earbuds -- the C40i. Much like C30i that launched in April, the C40i use the same clip- or cuff-style shape as the Bose Open Ultra Earbuds, but Soundcore says the C40i offer greater comfort thanks to their flexible connectors.

Soundcore has kept the customized ear grips fit system (plastic sleeves that slide onto the earbuds for those with smaller ears). The C40i will be available on October 31 in Graphite Gray for $100, but Soundcore says two additional colors (Desert Bronze and Clarity Black) will be coming soon. Similar to the Bose Open Ultra, the C40i use physical button controls located on the rear portion of the clip.

Bose Personal Surround Sound first listen: You’ve never heard TV sound like this before

For most folks, using a set of wireless headphones or earbuds with a soundbar offers two main benefits: You can listen privately without disturbing others in your home (or even in your bed), and you can hear details like dialogue more clearly. Recently, Sonos added to these scenarios. Its Ace headphones can reproduce 5.1 or full 7.1.4 spatial audio when grouped with one of the company’s compatible soundbars.

And yet, each of these setups represents an either/or situation: You’re either listening to your soundbar or you’re listening to your wireless headphones or earbuds.
