Where to find the bookseller in Stardew Valley

Books are not completely new to Stardew Valley, so you should know all the tips and tricks about how they work. Prior to the 1.6 update, you could find lost books that gave some background details about Pelican Town but didn’t give you any in-game benefits like knowing the best gifts to give or how to find Meowmere. Now, there is a new collection of books that grant your character some nice buffs or abilities. You can find a few of these new books hidden in the world, like the new Powdermelon seeds, but there are some exclusive ones you need to buy from a new bookseller NPC. Despite not making any business sense, they are only open for brief windows of time in a specific place. Here’s when and where to find the bookseller.

The bookseller sets up shop north of Joja Mart and the museum just up some stairs. If you go on any day you like, odds are you will find the place deserted.

The bookseller will only come to town around twice per season via their hot air balloon. You can see what dates they are scheduled to arrive next by reading the calendar by Pierre’s shop, as well as looking for the notification message the game delivers when they come.

Each book is quite expensive, costing up to 25,000 gold, but you only need to buy and read a book once to receive its skill or bonus permanently. The exception to that is books that grant you XP in a specific skill, which you can buy as many as you like to max out your skills. Make sure you visit the bookseller on each visit, too, because the stock of books will change every time they arrive.

Stardew Valley 1.6 has finally arrived on consoles and mobile
Special Orders board in Stardew Valley.

Stardew Valley console and mobile players will want to start a new farm soon. The long-awaited 1.6 update is finally available for all platforms on Monday, bringing with it a new farm type, more dialogue with NPCs, new events, and too many other things to count.

The 1.6 update launched for PC players on March 19, so console and mobile players have been waiting almost eight months for the release. In July, developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that it was taking longer than expected. The following month, he wrote in another post that the ports have been the "primary focus" for the team. He had even stopped working on the Stardew follow-up Haunted Chocolatier to get the console and mobile updates finished.

Stardew Valley

There are few cozy games as successful and beloved as Stardew Valley, so it's no wonder it has received regular updates since its 2016 release.

The 1.6 update for Stardew Valley was released back in March 2024 for PC, adding new festivals and events, NPC dialogues, farm types, more pets, and much more. Unfortunately, the update did not immediately release on consoles, leaving farmers playing on smartphones, Switch, Xbox or PlayStation waiting for all the new content.

How to get all pets in Stardew Valley
Standing beside pet dog in Stardew Valley.

Although having a pet cat or dog has been a longtime feature in Stardew Valley, the significant 1.6 update has allowed players to own more than just one pet. Not only that, but developer ConcernedApe added turtles as an entirely new type of pet to this charming farming simulator.

Adopting more pets isn't as easy as it may sound, and you'll have to prove that you can take care of more than just one creature at a time. If you're ready to take that leap and want as many pets as possible in Stardew Valley, we'll explain how you can adopt more animals in the 1.6 update, which is now available for console and mobile.
How to adopt more pets in Stardew Valley
Aside from the pet that everyone gets at the start of a Stardew Valley playthrough, players can adopt additional pets once they've reached maximum friendship levels with their main pet. Players will get their first pet for free during their first spring once they've earned at least 1,000 gold. Marnie will appear outside their door with a dog or a cat, depending on which animal they chose as their favorite during character creation.
