Senua looks into the water in Hellblade 2

During the Xbox Games Showcase today, we got a new look at Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 and learned that it will come out next year.

After a brief introduction from Senua actor Melina Juergens, we jumped into nearly four minutes of gameplay. We see Senua explore a misty, mysterious cave that seems to be shifting all around her. Senua continues to struggle with the voices in her head, which eventually lead her to look at her reflection in the water and proclaim that everything she’s done has led her to this place. She then gets pulled into the water at the end of the trailer.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II - The Senua Trailer | Xbox Games Showcase 2023

It was a fairly brief gameplay demo, but one that really impressed. The lines between gameplay and cutscenes were blurred as it’s all letterboxed and looks fantastic. Of course, the excellent sound design from the first game also carries over and allowed us to get into the headspace of Senua, even during this brief trailer. I look forward to going back and watching this with a good pair of headphones later today.

Considering that Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 was actually revealed alongside the Xbox Series X console in December 2020, it’s nice to see the game is shaping up well. It’s also great to finally get a release window for it. While we don’t have a release date, we did get a release year for Ninja Theory’s highly anticipated Xbox exclusive.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will be released for PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2024. Like all first-party Xbox Game Studios titles, it will be available on Xbox Game Pass at release next year.

You’ll have to wait just a little longer for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
A Stalker from Stalker 2 looks off in the distance with a radioactive symbol behind him.

Upcoming survival game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been delayed yet again, but unlike some of its other delays, it's only by around two months. Developer GSC Game World posted a video and statement on Thursday saying the game's release, which was previously set for September 5, will now be November 20. It wrote that the developers want to take the time to fix some bugs (or "anomalies," as it calls them).

The video, posted on YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), says the zone will remain "out of bounds" until that date. The player character then opens their table to see the new date. "Really?" they say. "Again?"

Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the next hotly anticipated entry in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise. The game is releasing over 13 years after the last entry in the series, and it's making its debut on consoles as an Xbox Series X exclusive.

Developer GSC Game World was forced to delay this title after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began and uprooted the team members' lives. Despite the hardships and tragedy every member of the team no doubt suffered, and all the sacrifices they made, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was not abandoned and the team pushed on to continue developing the game.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 seems like it will be well worth the wait

Rumblings about a sequel to the cult classic S.T.A.L.K.E.R, an atmospheric, yet janky supernatural shooter set within the radioactive zone around Chornobyl, have been around since 2010. The current version of the sequel from GSC Game World has been discussed since 2020. It was initially going to launch as early as April 2022, but due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, its development has been rife with delays, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was pushed back again and again, all the way until this September.

With only a few months to go until launch, GSC Game World finally had the game playable at Summer Game Fest this year. I went hands-on with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, and it's shaping up to be a brutal survival shooter that will be well worth the wait.
