3 new PS Plus games you should play this weekend (October 4-6)

It’s October, so it’s finally time to start watching more horror movies and playing more horror video games to get in a spooky mood. Thankfully, recent additions to PS Plus are making it very easy to settle into that vibe. On top of that, a wrestling video game has just hit PlayStation Plus Essential ahead of the last big WWE events of the year. All of that has informed my picks for the three games PS Plus subscribers should check out this weekend.

The Last of Us Part I

At this point, The Last of Us is so iconic that it needs little introduction. It was a landmark horror video game that set new standards for video game narrative with its tale about Joel and Ellie. It was originally released for PS3 in 2013 and remastered for PS4 in 2014. The Last of Us Part I is a remake built for PS5. It gives the entire game a visual overhaul and adds accessibility features and an overall game feel to bring the adventure more in line with its 2020 sequel. If you haven’t played The Last of Us yet, you need to try it out now that the definitive version of it is on PS Plus.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!

When you first boot up Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, it might just seem like a normal visual romance novel about dating girls in the same high school club as you. Before long, you’ll discover that this is a horror game that can get quite unsettling as it frequently breaks the fourth wall. Doki Doki Literature Club went viral on websites like YouTube when it launched on PC in 2017 before coming to consoles in 2021 with some additional content. It’s the perfect game to play in early October, right between back-to-school season and Halloween.

The PS4 and PS5 versions of Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! are PlayStation Plus Essential games until November 4. It’s also available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

WWE 2K24

If you’re just in the mood for dumb fun and enjoy wrestling, you should check out WWE 2K24. The latest entry in 2K’s annual wrestling game series, WWE 2K24 mostly makes incremental improvements over predecessors to add more depth to modes like MyGM and the core wrestling gameplay. You know what you’re getting into when you download a game like WWE 2K24 on the weekend of the Bad Blood event. For fans of wrestling who have yet to pick it up, it’ll make for an enjoyable gaming weekend.

3 new PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (February 7-9)

It's the shortest month of the year, but PlayStation is still packing it full of new games joining the PlayStation Plus catalog. The first week is always dedicated to the Essential tier, meaning these games are available to anyone with a subscription. Time is at a premium this month with all the massive upcoming PS5 games, like Monster Hunter Wilds and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, but they aren't here just yet. This weekend, we have a series of games that are perfect holdovers to make the wait for your next giant time investment more bearable. We've got a fantastic co-op game, a shorter game you might be able to beat in a day or two, and a surprising remake you might just fall in love with. If you've got nothing else planned, these are the 3 new PlayStation Plus games you should check out this weekend.
High on Life
HIGH ON LIFE Official Game Trailer

Games very rarely attempt to be funny on purpose. Comedy is already incredibly subjective, and because the player has so much control over the pace of a game it makes it almost impossible for every joke to land as it is intended. High on Life comes from Squanch Games and is one of the rare examples of a game that uses the medium of games to its advantage when crafting jokes. It is a brisk first-person shooter set in a sci-fi world where you become an alien bounty hunter welding living weapons called Gatlians that are all voiced by comedians such as J. B. Smove, Tim Robinson, Betsy Sodaro, Jack Black, and many more. If the humor of Rick and Morty doesn't hit for you, it may not do it for you here either, but if it does then you'll have a blast.

3 new PS Plus games to play this weekend (January 24-26)

The initial batch of PS Plus games for the Essential tier left many subscribers disappointed with the likes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League headlining. Thankfully, the second wave of Extra and Premium titles more than makes up for that with some of the best PlayStation 5 games now available as part of the service. The upcoming PS5 games in February are stacked with amazing games, many of which are sequels so we've found the best games you should play this weekend that were just added to PS Plus to prepare for the likes of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector.

If you somehow missed one of the biggest games on PS5, you no longer have an excuse. God of War: Ragnarok is the definition of a modern AAA game in every way. The graphics are superb, the gameplay meaty and satisfying, and the story compelling and well-acted across the board. This is said to be the end of the Norse chapter of the series, but sets up plenty of new paths the series could eventually take. Plus, you will also be able to play the amazing free Valhalla DLC to really test your mastery of the combat once the main story is done.

3 PS Plus games you should play this weekend (January 17-19)

We're at the tail end of a particularly long gap between new PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog drops. As such, I don't have new games coming to the service to recommend. Instead, I want to spotlight the games you should check out to prepare for some of the first high-profile releases of the year. New games in the Dynasty Warriors, Sniper Elite, and Monster Hunter series will be launching over the next couple of months, and prior entries in each of those franchises are available as part of Sony's gaming subscription service. That's why PS Plus subscribers who are looking forward to these games should use this weekend to play catch-up (if you aren't already checking out Dynasty Warriors: Origins).
Sniper Elite 5
Sniper Elite 5 – Marksman Trailer | PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5

Sniper Elite: Resistance launches on January 30 and serves as a spinoff of Sniper Elite 5. It follows a Special Operations Executive agent helping the French Resistance fight off the encroaching Nazi threat. While it's meant to be standalone, some of the narrative context might not make sense unless you've played Sniper Elite 5. Thankfully, that game is part of the PS Plus game catalog and it's a substantially entertaining game in its own right. There are few things more satisfying in gaming than this series' slow-mo sniper kills. Sniper Elite 5, in particular, excels in making each level feel like a large sandbox with lots of options for completing objectives.
