Overwatch 2 Sojourn guide: abilities, strategies, counters, and more

The most exciting part of any Overwatch update, or in this case sequel, is the new heroes. Overwatch 2 launched with not one, but three brand new heroes across its three classes to expand the already impressive roster. The cast of Overwatch was already quite diverse in terms of design, but also how each hero functioned, with unique abilities, strengths, and roles in the competitive shooter. The new additions for Overwatch 2 include Sojourn, Kiriko, and Junker Queen.

Damage heroes are generally the most popular of the three main roles. They are the most offensive-focused and allow players to get into the action directly with high-powered weapons and abilities. Sojourn fits the bill in this regard, but like every class, has a set of abilities that make her shine differently than the others. If you want to master this Damage class hero, here’s a full guide on Sojourn for Overwatch 2.

Sojourn overview

Sojourn Origin Story | Overwatch 2

The Canadian hero Sojourn comes packing a railgun with two firing modes. You can either shoot rapid-fire projectiles like a traditional rifle, or a beam that is charged up whenever you deal damage with the primary fire. When fully charged, this railgun shot is extremely potent, even able to take down other Damage class heroes in a single shot if they have 200 health. Of course, like most Damage class heroes, she is very skill dependent — you will need to be able to land shots and have good positioning to make the most of her tool kit.

To help keep Sojourn not only mobile but a more slippery target is her Power Slide, which you can use to dip in and out of fights, get to advantageous positions on the map, or just speed up your basic movement. Using this skill often, but also being able to still land your shots, is key to doing well with Sojourn.

Sojourn abilities

Power Slide: We touched on this skill a bit, but what it does is let Sojourn slide along the ground, similar to a slide in other FPS games like Apex Legends, but instead of slowing down, she gains speed thanks to her mechanical legs having thrusters. On top of that, if you jump before the slide ends you will get a super-jump of sorts.

Disruptor Shot: This special shot launches an energy projectile that will create a field wherever it lands that slows and deals a little damage over time to any enemies inside it, making it great for area denial. If an enemy is within the zone for the entire duration, it will deal about 200 damage.

Overclock: Sojourn’s ultimate is a little underwhelming when described, but is very potent in the right hands. When activated, Sojourn’s secondary railgun shot will automatically charge over time, regardless of whether or not you’re landing regular shots. Plus, when you do let off a railgun bolt, it will also be buffed to pierce enemies, meaning you can hit multiple targets if they’re fortunate enough to line up for you.

Best ways to play Sojourn

When picking Sojourn, you are going to be on the front lines of battle and relying heavily on your ability to land shots with your primary weapon. The Disruptor Shot is your only other real offensive option, though it has quite a long cooldown and isn’t likely to get any eliminations on its own. Instead, focus on laying down primary fire, sliding to stay mobile and avoid damage yourself, and building up your railgun charge.

Sojourn is most deadly at medium range. Here you can most effectively land your primary shots and then finish off weakened opponents with a precise railgun shot. While it isn’t useless to engage from longer ranges, know that Sojourn’s attacks are not hit-scan, meaning they have travel time and can be dodged. Stay in on the action, always be mobile, and remember that she has no way to heal herself. so coordinate with your Support heroes to stay healthy.

What characters counter Sojourn

Another Damage class Sojourn really struggles with is Pharah. Due to Pharah’s ability to stay airborne and attack from longer ranges, it is very difficult to land your primary shots on her. If you have a railgun shot already charged, it can help, but this is usually one duel you will want to avoid.

You will also want to keep out of range of close-range heroes like Reaper, Tracer, and Reinhardt that can out-damage you in tight quarters. Keep at a medium distance, and use your slide to escape bad matchups, and Sojourn will work well on any team.

Blizzard Entertainment might test out a 6v6 format after removing it ahead of Overwatch 2's launch, although nothing is set in stone just yet.

In an approximately 3,600-word blog post posted Thursday, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller said that the team is looking into "running a series of events" to test new "composition formats," specifically 6v6, based on player feedback.

Best characters in Concord
The Concord cast eating in a diner.

Hero shooters, fighting games, and RPGs are the best examples of game genres where picking the right character makes the biggest difference. Each game wants to be balanced, especially competitive ones like Concord, but that only gets more difficult the more characters that are included. Concord has a large roster of 16 Freegunners, and no two are exactly alike. Each one has a unique weapon, two abilities, and tweaks on their movement options at least. Unlike a lot of other games in the genre, these heroes aren't cleanly divided into roles like Tank, DPS, or Healer. Instead, you need to experiment with each one to figure out which you like and which always get you eliminated. That, or you could let us give you the inside info on which are the best characters in Concord right now.
Lennox -- the best self-sufficient DPS
Did the author of this guide have a little bias toward Lennox before playing? Perhaps, but it turned out that he is actually one of the top DPS picks in the game. He comes with two different pistols, one more powerful and slow-firing and a secondary with a shorter range and faster rate of fire. The first can essentially snipe enemies if you can line up the shots, while the second covers you if someone gets in close. His passive takes away his biggest flaw: reloading. If you swap weapons as you run out of ammo, that gun you swapped out will automatically reload when you switch back to it. His exploding knife skill is deadly and easy to integrate into combat, and his regeneration means you can keep yourself fighting even without a healer or health pack around.
Haymar -- the best zoning DPS
Haymar is a more technical character than most. Her bow only has one shot before needing a reload, so you need to be on point and not try to tank encounters head-on. The longer you aim your bow shot, the more damage it deals, so ambushing is the best approach. Blinding Flash has a ton of utility since it completely blinds anyone it hits, and Wall of Fire can be placed to cut off routes or deal direct burning damage. Since she has such great air mobility, you can find all the best angles to control the flow of a match.
Kyps -- the best support disruptor

One look at Kyps' design will tell you almost everything you need to know. She's a spy character and meant to be played as one. Her pistol deals good damage, but her low HP pool means you want to stay out of direct firefights. She's best for objective game modes since she can place traps around the map that will ping enemies if they pass through to reveal their locations. Her other tool is a grenade that shreds shields and disables enemy abilities. If things get a little too hot, she also gets temporary invisibility after a dodge to make a sneaky getaway.
Emari -- the best offensive tank
There are a few tanks to pick from in Concord, but Emari is the most balanced in our opinion. She obviously has a ton of health and a passive buff that reduces damage to her body, but her scrap cannon can shred enemies in seconds at close range. If you stick to close-quarters areas, or need to defend an objective, she's essential for your squad. In terms of abilities, Armor Generator grants any teammates in range armor to buff them up for a fight, and Projectile Shield is the standard energy shield you see in almost all hero shooters. It's just as good here for leading a push through a chokepoint.
Jebali -- the best support healer
Healers are a bit rare in Concord and tend to be restricted to pure support and are not all that fun to play. Jebali is a kind of hybrid healer who can hold his own. He's got a flashy rifle that works best in close and midrange, but it's his two orb abilities that you need to watch out for. Hunter Orb is a homing orb that deals damage to whoever it hits, while Life Pulse shoots an orb that creates a healing AoE for all allies. However, the trick is that the more damage you do with the Hunter Orb, the better the Life Pulse is. This lets you stay offensive and provide support for your team without having to completely withdraw from offense.
IT-Z -- the best hit-and-run attacker

Splitgate 2: release date window, trailers, gameplay, and more
A character in pink armor and a player character with two guns pointing towards a yellow portal in Splitgate 2.

In 2021, the original Splitgate became an overnight success when word spread about its beta. It blended the best elements of arena shooters with the mind-bending mechanics of Portal to become one of the best FPS games on PS5. Instead of simply running and shooting around a map, all players had the ability to create portals to flank and create new sightlines through. This opened up a ton of possibilities, and yet the game was almost immediately abandoned after reaching 1.0. Now, developer 1047 Games is back with an upcoming video game sequel. Competition is tough in terms of upcoming PC games, from Civilization VII to Monster Hunter Wilds, so let's see if this genre-blending FPS has what it takes to compete.

Splitgate 2 will be a cross-platform game, so you can also see it on our lists of upcoming PS5 games and upcoming Xbox Series X games, but sadly not on our upcoming Switch games list.
