Kirby Air Riders for Nintendo Switch 2 gives a GameCube classic a sequel

Mario Kart World wasn’t the only racing game announced for Switch 2 during today. Near the end of the lengthy Direct, Nintendo also revealed Kirby Air Riders. The sequel to the 2003 GameCube cult classic won’t be a launch title for the Switch 2, but it is still set to release before the end of the year.

The reveal trailer itself didn’t show off any gameplay, but we did get a nice look at Kirby in all his pink puffy glory riding on a star and racing against some foes. The original Kirby Air Ride was directed by Masahiro Sakurai, who has more recently been hard at work directing all the Super Smash Bros. games since Brawl. Sakurai is returning for Kirby Air Riders, so fans of the cult classic can feel relaxed knowing the title is in good hands.

What made the original Kirby Air Ride so unique are the simplistic controls. Unlike other racers, there is no input for making your vehicle move forward. All the player had to do was control the direction of motion and do all other interactions (which included braking, boosting, and sucking up enemies) with the A button. The highlight of the game was it’s City Trial mode which set players loose in a large map and tasked them with navigating obstacles and random events while collecting upgrades in order to face off in a random final battle at the end of a time limit. Hopefully Kirby Air Riders will keep the simplicity and novelty of the original game when it comes to Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.

Nintendo Switch Online adding GameCube games exclusively for Switch 2

The Switch 2 direct wasn't just about all the shiny new games you'll play, there was also a much requested update to Nintendo Switch Online focused on some great old ones too! Yes, GameCube games are finally coming to Nintendo's online games service. The major caveat being that this is exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2.

This update is part of the Nintendo Switch 2 Online + Expansion Pack service, which to date already lets you play games from past consoles from the NES to Nintendo 64. The first game that will be included is The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, the classic cartoon looking entry that sees Link setting sail in a world of islands. That itself is pretty exciting, but does mean that the constant rumors of a remake or port of the title are probably dead in the water.

The new Switch 2 Pro Controller has some big improvements
A overhead view of a Switch 2 Pro controller.

Not to be outdone by the Switch 2 itself, the already great Pro Controller is getting an upgrade. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller will launch on the same day as the console, that's June 5, and will bring some much needed improvements for gamers to take advantage of. The key features to get excited about are an audio jack, the new C button, and back buttons!

Visually the Switch 2 Pro Controller looks a lot like it's predecessor, with a cool black finish. This time around, however, we have a silver accent on the shoulder buttons that brings to mind Xbox's Elite Controller. In the center, the C button has been added to let players use the Switch 2's new GameChat feature to talk and share screen capture with friends.
