Did you know that if you have a Netflix subscription, you have access to a pretty fantastic library of games right now?

Over the past few years, Netflix’s gaming efforts have slowly paid off. The subscription service has built up a strong roster of both original games and modern classics that subscribers can play at no extra charge. If you haven’t checked the list of available games in a while, you might be surprised to see that you can play games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and Hades right now without spending any extra money.

In fact, Netflix has been especially busy this month. The service has added a handful of solid games new and old throughout May. If you’re looking for a new game to play this weekend but don’t feel like spending any money to do so, try these three games that you can download and play right now as long as you have a Netflix account.

Sonic Mania Plus

Sega

There have been a ton of Sonic the Hedgehog games released in the past few years. Some are good fun, like last year’s Sonic Dream Team. Others, like Sonic Frontiers, are a bit more polarizing. There’s one Sonic game that almost every fan of the series seems to agree on though: the excellent Sonic Mania Plus. This title is a faithful homage to the series’ Sega Genesis roots, making for a pixel perfect retro platformer with new levels and bosses that have the spirit of the old games. The version available with Netflix adds even more content to the mix, including new characters and Encore mode.

You can jump in right now on mobile devices so long as you have a Netflix subscription. Otherwise, you can play it on just about every modern platform, from PC to Nintendo Switch.

Newfangled Games

While Sonic Mania Plus is available everywhere, one new Netflix standout this May is exclusive to the service. That would be Paper Trail, an original game by developer Newfangled Games that’s worth your attention.

The puzzle-adventure game is a clever mobile title that has players folding up levels like origami to navigate them. It’s a brain-busting puzzler filled with tactile gameplay. It just feels good to fold a level in half with a swipe and cross a seemingly impossible gap. Paper Trail joins a surprisingly solid list of Netflix exclusives, which includes greats like Poinpy and Laya’s Horizon.

Braid: Anniversary Edition

Thekla, Inc.

Braid is one of those games that you simply need to play at some point in your life. It’s a foundational title that helped set the stage for the rise of independent games and games as an elevated storytelling medium.

If you’ve yet to play it, Netflix has the best version of it available to download right now. Braid: Anniversary Edition freshens up the classic puzzle-platformer with updated graphics and behind-the-scenes featurettes that discuss its creation. Even if you don’t care too much about the bonus archival material, you’re getting a clever puzzle game with a time-control gimmick that still feels fresh by today’s standards.

Its creator, Jonathan Blow, may have turned into a controversial figure since the original game’s release, but that shouldn’t stop you from appreciating an important work that earned a re-release.

3 new PS Plus games that you should play this weekend (December 20-22)
Frey in Square Enix's Forspoken.

The latest batch of new PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium game catalog additions was released this week. As a result, PS Plus subscribers have a ton of new options when it comes to what to play as we approach what is many people's holiday break. Games from this most recent batch are what I'm recommending people check out this weekend. One of the titles is technically a Christmas game, so it's fitting to play this time of year, while my other recommendations are good options if you're looking for something to play with others.
Forspoken
Forspoken - Official Launch Trailer

Square Enix's Forspoken is a high-profile action RPG console exclusive that was released on PlayStation 5 in 2023. While its quip-heavy dialogue definitely isn't for everyone, the way it incorporates the player's magical abilities into combat and traversal is truly exhilarating. Dashing through large fields, surfing on top of water, and launching bullet-like streams of rocks at enemies is immensely satisfying. Forspoken's Isekai adventure technically begins with the main character, Frey, being whisked away from New York City around Christmas. That technically makes this a Christmas game, giving you all the more reason to check it out this weekend.

It Takes Two's main characters ride frog taxis.

This is a good week to be subscribed to PlayStation Plus. Three new PS Plus Essential games just became available, one of which should be a must-play for subscribers this weekend. And with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered poised to launch next week, PS Plus Premium subscribers can prepare for it by playing the two other Legacy of Kain games that are new additions to PS Plus Premium's Classic Catalog this weekend.
It Takes Two
It Takes Two – Official Gameplay Trailer

Josef Fares' Hazelight Studios is known for making story-driven co-op games that thematically lean into the fact that they need to be played with someone else. The studio's latest game is It Takes Two, a 3D platformer that follows a married couple with relationship problems who get trapped inside dolls' bodies. Their journey to repair their relationship is equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and engaging as both a story-driven game and co-op experience. It Takes Two won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2021 for a reason, so you should check it out if you haven't already. Playing It Takes Two will also hype you up for whatever Fares is making next.

The protagonists of GTA V pose for the camera.

This week, we finally got a massive batch of new games added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalogs. It's a fantastic bunch of titles, thanks to the inclusion of some AAA heavy hitters like Grand Theft Auto V, as well as great retro classics, and even some standout indies. As there's a wealth of games to choose from, you might be having some trouble deciding which ones to check out first. I'd start with any of these three titles, which are all among the best games on PS Plus.
Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V needs little introduction, as it's one of the most iconic and bestselling video games ever. If you haven't played it before, know that this is one of the most entertaining open-world games ever made, with a strong main story about three men drawn back into a life of crime. On top of that, there's its nearly infinite online mode. Whether you're concerned with actually completing missions or just want to drive around and mess with the citizens of Los Santos, GTA V offers some of the most fun sandbox gaming available. Grand Theft Auto VIĀ is poised to release sometime in 2025, so now is the perfect time to revisit the last GTA title to better understand the high bar GTA 6 and every other future release from Rockstar Games will need to live up to.
