This classic, forgotten console RTS is getting a full Steam remaster

Team Buddies, a PlayStation-only real-time strategy game from 25 years ago, just received a Steam listing for a full remaster. It looks like this cult classic has returned from the grave with online multiplayer, updated graphics, and all the chaotic fun you remember.

Team Buddies isn’t like most RTS games from the era. You might think about Command & Conquer or Starcraft, but a couch co-op game about stacking crates? That’s a little more out there. Despite the sound of it, Team Buddies has a lot more depth than you might first think.

You start each level with a group of warriors. On their own, they aren’t much of a threat, but as you stack and combine crates, you can craft various weapons, spawn more troops, or even build a tank. The way you combine crates, whether vertically, in a flat square, or in a cube of eight, will yield different results each time.

Players will be able to choose between classic or remastered graphics, depending on preference. Fair warning: the game does look rather dated, with graphics that bring some of the early 3D Bomberman games to mind, so more modern graphics may be the way to go unless you’re after a dose of nostalgia.

The New Reborn Mode is an online-only, all-new experience that’s set to have much larger maps, more weapons, and “even more frenetic combat.” And of course, the remaster will come with achievements and trophies, as well as improved enemy AI.

This new version of Team Buddies doesn’t have a release date outside of “coming soon” or an estimated price, but it’s appearance is nothing short of surprising — and honestly, it’s kind of nice to get a remaster of a much more obscure title than yet another Nintendo remake.

If you want to buy Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam, you have to buy its remaster

As we get closer to the release of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, it's become more and more difficult to purchase the original Complete Edition of the game. This week, it's starting to be delisted from digital PC storefronts.

It was first removed from the Epic Games Store, as some ResetEra users reported earlier this week. While the store page is still live, the buy button has been grayed out and just reads "unavailable." There also isn't a link to purchase the remaster from this page, although you can find it through search and preorder it ahead of its October 31 release date.

After Freedom Wars, this PlayStation Vita classic deserves a remaster
Soul Sacrifice Delta's key art.

If there’s one thing that the PlayStation Vita delivered, it was great Monster Hunter clones after Capcom’s hit series jumped ship from PSP to Nintendo 3DS. The list included games like Koei Tecmo’s Toukiden, Bandai Namco’s God Eater, and Gungho’s Ragnarok Odyssey Ace. While these mission-based games were perfect fit for the Vita’s pick-up-and-play lifestyle, they were also available on PS3.

Sony Japan even joined into the fray with the 2015 Vita exclusive Freedom Wars, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a remaster on modern platforms next January, courtesy of Bandai Namco. On the heels of that surprise announcement, there’s one other hunting action game that needs to break free from the Vita’s shackles: Soul Sacrifice Delta. It's an enhanced version of 2013's Soul Sacrifice that added more content and gameplay adjustments.

Soul Sacrifice Delta was released in 2014 and designed by Keiji Inafune (yes, the auteur behind the infamous Mighty No. 9). It plays like how you’d expect from a Monster Hunter-like action game. You can hunt down your main target and hit its weak points to gather materials and create stronger weapons. It’s an engaging gameplay loop that makes sure you’re always prepared to fight increasingly stronger monsters.

Horizon Zero Dawn might be getting a remaster for PS5 and PC

Sony has more remasters planned if an Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating seemingly posted ahead of schedule is any indication. Horizon Zero Dawn, Guerilla Games' 2017 open-world critical darling, is getting a remaster, according to a listing on the ESRB website.

The listing says that Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will have the same rating as the original: T for teen for blood, drug references, language, mild sexual themes, and violence. It's been rated for PlayStation 5 and PC. Unfortunately, the description is the same as the one on the original game's page, so no other information is available.
